Anna Liza was supposed to be an ABS-CBN "teleserye" which is a remake of the original 1980s soap opera of the same title by ABS-CBN's rival television network GMA. The original version starred the late Julie Vega in the title role along with Rey 'PJ' Abellana, Renato Del Prado, Edgar Mande, Leni Santos, among others.

ABS-CBN had already begun production on the series when it was announced on April 19, 2008 that the project has been shelved indefinitely for still-unknown reasons. Several of the failed cast members have since moved on to various television projects, including those to be made by ABS-CBN's rival network GMA.
