MV Brisbane Star

MV Brisbane Star

MV "Brisbane Star" was a refrigerated cargo liner built by Cammell Laird & Company Ltd. Shipyards in Birkenhead, United Kingdom for Union Cold Storage. The ship had a long career in the merchant navy, and it was involved in many operations during the Second World War, most notably Operation Pedestal. The ship was torpedoed, and it suffered extensive damage to its bow, which was torn clear off the ship.

The ship had a gross tonnage of 11076 while the net tonnage was of 6787. The ship dimensions were 530.0 x 70.4 x 32.2 feet and was propelled by twin screws moved by two 10 cylinder oil engines manufactured in Winterthur, Switzerland by Sulzer Brothers. In 1942 the ship was transferred to Fredrick Leyland & Co. Ltd under the same managers.

MV "Brisbane Star" was damaged by the German Luftwaffe during Operation Pedestal. "Brisbane Star" arrived in Malta's harbour on 14 August 1942 and one crew member was lost during the operation.

In 1950 the ship was transferred to Lamport & Holt line and then transferred again in 1959 to Blue Star Line Ltd. In July of 1963 "Brisbane" was sold to Margalante Compania Naviera S.A., Liberia, and renamed "Enea". Later in 1963 the ship was sold to Japanese shipbreakers Izumi-Ohtsu where it was scrapped.
