- Louis-Auguste Desmarres
Louis-Auguste Desmarres (1810–1882) was a French
ophthalmologist who practiced medicine inParis . After earning his medical degree he was an assistant toFrédéric Jules Sichel (1802–1868). One of Desmarres' better known assistants was Swiss ophthalmologistJohann Friedrich Horner (1831–1886).Desmarres was one of the better known ophthalmic
surgeon s in 19th century France, and is remembered today for an important textbook on diseases of theeye called "Traité théorique et pratique des maladies des yeux". In 1850 he introduced a surgical procedure forpterygium . Today, there are numerous surgical instruments that bear his name, including Desmarres curved lid retractor, Desmarres corneal dissector and Desmarreschalazion forceps .
