14 December 1944 , Newark,New Jersey -14 March 1972 ,Harlem ) [Many standard sources give the date as January 14, 1944, but family members have the date as December 14th.] was an American soulsinger . She signed withWarner Bros. Records subsidiaryLoma Records in 1967 and released the biggest of several hits, "Hypnotized". Soon after her career took off, however, she was diagnosed withdiabetes and died in 1972 after she collapsed backstage at theApollo Theater .
