Pooc is one of the 22 barangays of the city of Talisay on the island of Cebu, in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. It lies between Mohon to the north, Biasong to the east, the Bohol Strait (sometimes known as the Cebu Strait) to the south, and the Municipality of Minglanilla to the west. It covers an area of 155,428 hectares and has 12 "sitios". The barangay is populated largesly by the middle-income bracket of Talisay's inhabitants. Pooc is now divided administratively into Pooc Diyot and Pooc Dako.

History

Many fruit tress were planted in the area in the 1920s, and their small fruit attracted black birds which made a sound similar to "Pok Pok", which was later transcribed as the area name "Pooc".

Demographics

Pooc had a population of 6495 in 2002 according to a local survey conducted by the barangay. The National Statistics Office showed a population of 5976 in 2000. Of these, 51% were male and 49% female, in contrast with the Talisay average of 46.37% male and 53.63% female. Employment

35% of Pooc residents or working age are employed in fishing. A further 25% are in business, 5% in farming, and 15% employed by other means, while unemployment runs at 20%. Health

Attractions

There are two beach resorts (Blue Beach and Borromeo Beach), both on Borromeo Street. There is also a swimming pool - the Aqua Cainta Resort - at Sitio Cainta.
