Wasfi al-Tal

Wasfi al-Tal

Wasfi al-Tal (also Wasfi Tel) (1919 - November 28, 1971) ( _ar. وصفي التل) was prime minister of Jordan for several terms. He was assassinated by the Black September unit of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Al-Tal was prime minister and defense minister during the Black September uprising by Palestinians in 1970. He earned the particular ire of PLO leaders for his role in repressing the revolt.

On November 28, 1971, while attending an Arab League summit in Cairo, al-Tal was shot dead. Four gunmen approached the prime minister on the steps of the Sheraton hotel and shot him. As he lay dying, one of his assassins shouted that the four were members of Black September, an elite unit of the PLO's mainstream al-Fatah faction which later perpetrated the Munich massacre. The al-Tal assassination was the first operation conducted by the group. Egypt released the assassins two years later. [http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=60494]
