The R Line is a secondary main line running between Charlotte, North Carolina and Columbia, South Carolina. The line is operated by Norfolk Southern Railway and is part of the NS Piedmont Division.
Trains on the R Line are mostly manifest, grain and locals. Manifests to and from Linwood Yard use the line on a daily basis. Grain trains that use the R-Line are bound to and from Asheville, North Carolina.
Crew changes occur in Salisbury, North Carolina.
Empty hopper trains are often headed south for the Charlotte District and take the R-Line southbound.
Amtrak passenger trains and intermodal and coal trains do not use the R Line.
