Contexts, subtitled Understanding People in their Social Worlds, is an official publication of the American Sociological Association. The magazine is designed to be a more accessible source of sociological ideas and research, and it has been deeply inspired by the movement within the discipline of sociology towards public sociology. Founded in 2002, Contexts is a quarterly journal published for the American Sociological Association by SAGE Publications; until 2011, it was published by the University of California Press. It is edited by a team in the sociology department at the University of Minnesota.
Berkeley sociology professor Claude Fischer founded the magazine in 2002. Jeff Goodwin and James M. Jasper edited it from 2005 to 2007, injecting a certain amount of controversial humor such as New Yorker cartoons and a column written by "Harry Green" (actually James M. Jasper) called "The Fool." It is currently edited by Doug Hartman and Chris Uggen, sociologists at the University of Minnesota.
The magazine differs from a typical academic journal, as it is targeted more toward students and the general public. It is used widely in courses, and has been excerpted in The Contexts Reader edited by Jeff Goodwin and James M. Jasper. The Reader is also used in many undergraduate courses.
The ISSN is 1536-5042.
