Biography
Jessica Aguirre is a first generation Cuban-American, the daughter of immigrants she grew up in Florida. Jessica began her broadcasting career while as a student at the University of Miami.[2]
While living in Florida, Aguirre was hired as a general assignment reporter for Fox affiliate WSVN. Aguirre would eventually be promoted as co-anchor for the station's 10:00 pm newscast. The 10:00 pm newscast featured Aguire and Kelley Mitchell and co-anchors and a young Jillian Warry reporting the weather.[3]
Aguirre then made her way to Los Angeles, California where she worked ABC owned-and-operated station KABC-TV as a reporter and anchor.[2] After her stint in Los Angeles, in the mid-1990s Aguirre then made her way to the San Francisco Bay Area where she was be hired KGO-TV Channel 7.
Aguirre was then hired as an anchor for NBC owned-and-operated station KNTV Channel 11. She currently anchors the station's 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm newscasts,[4] as well as the host of NBC Class Action [1].
During her long career, Aguirre has reported from Cuba to England and many places in between, even though the only place in between is the Azores Islands. She’s covered some of the worst natural disasters like Hurricane Andrew, one of the most devastating storms on record and man-made catastrophes like the Oklahoma City bombing, where 168 people died in an attack by homegrown terrorist Timothy McVeigh. She has covered race riots in Miami as well as prison riots in Atlanta and Louisiana. Her reporting has also taken her to GITMO, the prison at Guantanamo Bay and to London, England where she reported on Princess Diana.[1]
Charity work
Aguirre is very active in the community, volunteering her time with many charitable organizations. She supports the League of United Latin American Citizens and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. She also supports The Raphael House; San Francisco’s oldest family shelter, and El Hogar De Los Ninos, a Bay Area non-profit, which provides education for children in Nicaragua. She is also a member of National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.[1]
Personal
Aguirre who is fluent in Spanish resides in the East Bay with her husband and two daughters.[1]
