Lakes to Locks Passage

The Lakes to Locks Passage is a recreational waterway that extends from Waterford, New York to Montreal, Quebec. The Lakes to Locks Passage National Scenic Byway and All-American Road is the United States portion of a scenic highway route that closely parallels the waterway.

Waterway

* The Champlain Canal extends from the Erie Canal near Albany, New York to Whitehall, New York, with 11 locks numbered 1 to 12 (there is no lock 10).
* Lake Champlain
* Chambly Canal, bypassing rapids on the Richelieu River, with 9 locks
* Richelieu River

Highway

The highway route extends from Waterford, New York to Rouses Point, New York.

* U.S. Route 4 in New York from Waterford (mi. 14.33) to Whitehall, New York (mi. 73.19)
* New York State Route 22 from Whitehall (mi. 218.2) to Keeseville, New York (mi. 298.82)
* U.S. Route 9 in New York from Keeseville (mi. 288.79) to Chazy, New York (mi. 320.08)
* New York State Route 9B from Chazy (mi. 0.0) to Rouses Point, New York (mi. 5.7)The route also contains lakeside roads both on Point Au Roche and Cumberland Head, featured as "Scenic Byways."

Attractions

Nature affords scenic and recreational attractions. The autumn display of colors as the deciduous trees, especially sugar maples, change color is one seasonal attraction.

Historic attractions are numerous along most of the Passage. Military history in the five decades around the Revolutionary War provide many historic sites, especially Fort Ticonderoga and Saratoga National Historical Park.
