Berkeley Electronic Press

The Berkeley Electronic Press, also known as bepress, is an electronic publishing firm which was founded by academics in 1999. It is dedicated to producing products and services to aid scholarly communication, including electronic journals, institutional repositories, subject matter repositories, working paper series, and editorial management software.

Journals

Bepress publishes a large number of electronic journals in the social sciences, law, medicine, and natural sciences. The first ones were published in December, 2000. In 2006, it published over 900 articles in 39 journals. [http://www.bepress.com/aboutjournals.html]

Peer review process

The reviewing process at Berkeley Electronic Press journals tries to avoid the long delays in publishing prevalent at many social science journals, guaranteeing an evaluation within ten weeks. Authors submitting a paper to some Berkeley Electronic Press journals must promise to act as referees for two other papers, and agree to pay a fine if they fail to provide an adequate evaluation within the relevant deadline. Also, some Berkeley Electronic Press journals publish at several different quality-ranked levels. Thus if a paper is judged insufficient for the top quality tier, it may be published in a lower tier, decreasing the risk the author faces in submitting a paper for evaluation.
