Hamlin is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, United States. It is located on the Canada-US border with a border crossing into Grand Falls, NB. The population was 257 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.1 square miles (62.5 km²), of which, 23.3 square miles (60.3 km²) of it is land and 0.8 square miles (2.2 km²) of it (3.48%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 257 people, 103 households, and 73 families residing in the town. The population density was 11.0 people per square mile (4.3/km²). There were 122 housing units at an average density of 5.2/sq mi (2.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.11% White, 1.95% Native American, 0.39% Asian, and 1.56% from two or more races.

There were 103 households out of which 23.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.0% were married couples living together, 3.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the town the population was spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 32.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $32,625, and the median income for a family was $34,125. Males had a median income of $33,125 versus $14,688 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,600. About 9.9% of families and 10.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.1% of those under the age of eighteen and 20.0% of those sixty five or over.
