Mission

At BAU, with more than 300 higher education programs offered across a broad range of fields, we provide a rich and rewarding educational environment to some 15,000 students per year in Lebanon and abroad. Our students receive the best instruction leading to a degree from a nationally and internationally recognised and respected university. The university has an admirable reputation in the fields of dentistry, engineering, architecture, medicine, and pharmacy. Our information technology, science, law and arts education programs are also among the most popular in Lebanon and the region. We produce outstanding graduates that are highly motivated, knowledgeable and capable of meeting the global challenges. We take pride in saying that many of our graduates hold high ranking positions in Lebanon and other parts of the Arab World.

We are proud of our achievements in the higher education field. Undeniably, we have a strong history in providing quality-career oriented education on national and international levels for both undergraduates and postgraduates. But there are many challenges and demands facing the higher education system worldwide including an increasing demand for knowledge and skills. Hence, our attention nowadays is focused on understanding the factors shaping higher education and ensuring a sustainable future for BAU in the global educational community so that our many achievements can be built upon and enjoyed by generations to come.

Our vision is to make a difference in society through education and research whilst adhering to our academic values of intellectual freedom and integrity. Consequently, we have made commitments to strengthen our core intellectual disciplines as well as open new channels to scientific understanding in non-traditional fields. Similarly, we are also focusing on continually developing the university in order to cope with the increasing demands of our programs and technology in addition to maintaining our competitive edge in the region. For instance, internationalization of higher education along with global transfer of knowledge and skills that is enabled by rapid advances in information and communications technology is encouraging cross-border recognition of educational qualifications. Thus, the implementation of the credit hour system across all of our faculties will undoubtedly promote global recognition of our educational programs and also harmonize qualifications and credit transfer arrangements. Furthermore, our current campus expansion program that includes new campuses in Debbieh, Tripoli, Alexandria (Egypt) and a new branch in Saida will provide a strong and focused regional presence in addition to an increase in the number of programs and facilities.

Moreover, BAU is focusing on other strategic business issues such as developing and maintaining a culture that values and rewards quality teaching and learning; developing local and international partnerships and alliances; promoting outcome-related research in collaboration with local and international partners that contributes to national and international innovation; maintaining close interaction with industry and the community; making positive contributions to the community through our Community Services & Continuing Education Centre; and strengthening the support structures including technology and other infrastructure to enhance student learning.

I believe that these steps we are making are crucial in order for BAU, its students and community to meet the challenges and demands facing higher education system worldwide.

ectarian clashes

In January 25, 2007, fights between students in Beirut Arab University escalated into clashes across the city, between groups supporting and opposing the Lebanese government. The Lebanese army deployed armoured vehicles and fired shots in the air to disperse the fighters. An overnight curfew was imposed to stop the fighting. [cite news

Scuffles broke out between Sunni and Shiite students, who were respectively support and oppose of the current government, in the university's cafeteria and soon attracted local supporters of both groups.

Coming on the heels of mass demonstrations and a general strike called by Hezbollah calling on the Fouad Siniora-led government to step down, the clashes has raised fears of renewed civil conflict along sectarian lines in Lebanon.
