Castle Baynard Ward, one of 25 within the City of London, a self-governing enclave within the capital of the United Kingdom is an irregular shaped area, somewhat akin to a tuning fork [ [http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/about_us/voting/wards/ward_boundaries_map.htm Ward boundaries in context] ] bounded on the east by the wards of Queenhithe and Bread Street, the River Thames to the south and Farringdon Without to the north and west. Major landmarks within the ward include Blackfriars Bridge, HMS "President" and St Pauls Cathedral. In addition the area contains St Bride’s, Fleet Street, a church Betjeman described as “ magnificent, even by the exalted standards of Sir Christopher Wren” ["Sovereign City of London Churches", Betjeman,J. : Pitkin, Andover, 1967 (rpnt 1992) ISBN 0853725659] and St Andrew Wardrobe. In former times the ward also contained a church, known as St. Mary Magdalen Old Fish Street, which burnt down in 1886 and was not rebuilt ["Vanished churches of the City of London" Huelin, G.: London, Guildhall Library Publishing 1996 ISBN 0900422424 ] and its own charitable foundation,Castle Baynard Ward School [ [http://www.history.ac.uk/gh/18iii.htm Guildhall library records] ] . The ward derives its name from Baynard's Castle ["Book 2, Ch. 14-Castle Baynard Ward", in "A New History of London: Including Westminster and Southwark": Noorthouck, J. : London, R.Baldwin & Co 1773] which existed here from the Norman Conquest until it was burnt down during the Great Fire of London ["A Dictionary of London", Harben, H.A: Herbert Jenkins,London,1922] . Today the ward is possibly the busiest in an exceptionally concentrated area of commercial and tourist activity [ [http://www.cityoflondon.police.uk/CityPolice/SaferCityWards/YourCityWard/Wards/castlebaynard.htm City Police Overview] ] , but still retains its own distinct identity [ [http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/corporation/committees/ward/ward_newsletters/10.pdf Ward newsletter] ] .
