Buras-Triumph has become famous as the location where, on
August 29 ,2005 , at 6:10 AM CDT, the eye ofHurricane Katrina , by far the costliest natural disaster (and one of the deadliest) ever to strike the United States, made its strongest landfall. However, the storm surge and high winds began on the previous day,August 28 ,2005 . During those 2 days, the area was obliterated as a result.Geography
Buras-Triumph is located along the west bank of the
Mississippi River at coor dms|29|21|6|N|89|30|50|W|city (29.351783, -89.513815)GR|1 and has an elevation of convert|3|ft|1GR|3.According to the
United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of 7.2square mile s (18.6km² ), of which, 5.0 square miles (13.0 km²) of it is land and 2.2 square miles (5.6 km²) of it (30.32%) is water.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 3,358 people, 1,146 households, and 850 families residing in the CDP. Thepopulation density was 670.9 people per square mile (258.8/km²). There were 1,408 housing units at an average density of 281.3/sq mi (108.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 71.68% White, 10.90% African American, 1.67% Native American, 12.30% Asian, 1.28% from other races, and 2.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.10% of the population.There were 1,146 households out of which 40.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% were non-families. 20.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.40.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.9 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $33,059, and the median income for a family was $41,216. Males had a median income of $35,980 versus $16,917 for females. The
per capita income for the CDP was $13,426. About 18.1% of families and 20.7% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 23.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.References
