Waseer

Waseer

Waseer or Vaseer or Wasir (Urdu: وسیر ) is a Punjabi tribe and Jat gotra, mostly spread across the Punjab region divided between northern states of India and Punjab province of Pakistan.

Origin

Ancient history regards them as Rajputs, as well, due to their rich history of Raaj, in the Indian subcontinent. In Indian part, most of the "Waseers" belong to Sikh religion, whereas, in Pakistan, they are Muslims.

Sir Denzil Ibbetson, Sir Edward Maclagan and H. A. Rose write in their book "A Glossary of The Tribes and Castes of The Punjab and North-West Frontier Province" Vol.-III (First Ed. 1911, Re-published by Aziz Publishers, Lahore, Pakistan in 1978 ) that "Waseers" are Ponwars (also Panwar or Pawar). They wrote, " They are said to have come in to the Sandal Bar from Kot Kabula, beyond Pakpattan. Their arrival was fairly recent, as it dates from "Kalu", who fled from Farrukh Sayyar, the Moghal emperor, some generations ago; "Kalu" advanced to Ravi, and his successors "Sama" was the first to enter the Bar, eight generations ago. The "Wasirs" had to fight the "Bhagsins" on the west and the "Baloch" & "Sipraa" on the east during Ranjit Singh's time. They are called "Wasirs" after the first of the race who was converted to Islam by Hazrat Dewan Shah Chawali Mashaaikh.
