The Scottish 2nd XV League is the largest of the three organisations operating 2nd XV Leagues in Scotland. Contrary to its name, it does in fact include some 3rd XVs in its membership. Originally all 2nd XV rugby union league matches were played under the auspices of the Scottish 2nd XV League, however in recent years a number of breakaways have occurred - clubs in the Scottish Borders forming their own Borders Championship, and clubs in Edinburgh and the Lothians the Edinburgh & Lothian 2nd XV League (although confusingly, some clubs have their 2nd XVs in the Scottish and their 3rd XVs in this breakaway body). A Caledonia 2nd XV League was established for 2005-2006 but abandoned without a game played, although a competition for clubs in the very north of Scotland - the Brin Cup - did go ahead. Moves are afoot to reunite the 2nd XV league system.
The league was formerly called the Inter-City 2nd XV League prior to adopting its current title.
Promotion and relegation
The league has no current system for promotion and relegation, although according to its minutes for 2006, discussion is to take place on their creation. Clubs are appointed to a each division, although roughly corresponding to their positions in the Scottish Hydro Electric League Championship.
Team of the Year Award
West of Scotland RFC, 2nd XV were awarded the 2nd XV leagues Team of the Year award at the 2007/2008 2nd XV AGM. With the squad gaining promotion to the 2nd division last season and storming through that league to win this season only losing 83 points and gaining 833 in the process they fully deserve this award and are to be congratulated. Next season they will play in the top flight of The Scottish 2nd XV League. Having also won their league the West 3rd XV will next season (2008/2009) play as the West 2a's in the The Scottish 2nd XV League.
