USS "Harpers Ferry" (LSD-49) is a "Harpers Ferry"-class dock landing ship of the United States Navy. She was named for Harpers Ferry, Virginia (in present-day West Virginia), a significant location during the Civil War. The "USS Harpers Ferry" is commanded by CDR David L. Bossert, forward deployed at Sasebo, Japan, and assigned to Amphibious Group 1.
"Harpers Ferry" was laid down on 15 April 1991, by the Avondale Shipyards, New Orleans, Louisiana; launched on 16 January 1993 ; and commissioned on 7 January 1995 .
On 1 September 2002, "Harpers Ferry" relieved "Germantown" (LSD-42) as a forward-deployed naval unit in FA Sasebo, Japan.
During the 2008 Myanmar Cyclone Nargis crisis and the subsequent Operation Caring Response aid mission, as part of the USS|Essex|LHD-2|6 carrier group (also including USS|Juneau|LPD-10|2 and the USS|Mustin|DDG-89|6), she stood by off Burma from May 13 to June 5, waiting for the Myanmar junta government to permit US aid to its citizens.
