The Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is a world-class center of excellence focusing on chronic viral diseases, most notably HIV/AIDS, and virally linked cancers. IHV was founded in 1996 in a partnership arrangement between Maryland state, the city of Baltimore, the University System of Maryland and its medical system. Its co-founding specialists were Dr. Robert C. Gallo (co-discoverer of HIV and developer of the first HIV blood test), Dr. Robert R. Redfield (led the research that first demonstrated HIV could be hetrosexually transmitted), and Dr. William A. Blattner (epidemiologist who has pioneered studies of human retroviruses). As of|2008 Dr. Gallo continues as IHV Director, and Drs. Redfield and Blattner as IHV Associate Directors and directors of the epidemiology and clinical care research arms, respectively.
The IHV is dedicated to fundamental and clinical research leading to improved treatment and prevention of these diseases. The institute's unique structure connects cohesive, multidisciplinary research and clinical programs to streamline new treatments from discovery to patient. IHV serves the global scientific community and treats more than 4000 patients at clinics in Maryland, as well as nearly 100,000 patients across Africa and in the Caribbean.
