Haughton is a town in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,792 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Haughton is located at coor dms|32|31|48|N|93|30|23|W|city (32.530016, -93.506350)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,792 people, 1,038 households, and 782 families residing in the town. The population density was 661.4 people per square mile (255.4/km²). There were 1,169 housing units at an average density of 276.9/sq mi (107.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 76.29% White, 20.74% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.47% from other races, and 1.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.36% of the population.

There were 1,038 households out of which 40.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 16.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 20.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the town the population was spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,417, and the median income for a family was $38,164. Males had a median income of $28,224 versus $21,897 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,689. About 12.7% of families and 14.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.1% of those under age 18 and 17.7% of those age 65 or over.
