John Ogilvie (lexicographer)

John Ogilvie (April 17, 1797 – November 21, 1867) was a Scottish lexicographer who edited the "Imperial Dictionary". He was born April 17, 1797 in Marnoch, Banffshire (now in Aberdeenshire). He taught mathematics at Gordon's Hospital, Aberdeen from 1831 until 1859.

He compiled the "Imperial Dictionary" (published 1847–1850) using Noah Webster's "American Dictionary" as its basis, expanding it greatly. He also produced several other dictionaries, including "The Comprehensive English Dictionary" (1863) and "The Student's English Dictionary" (1865).
