[ [http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/countrysites.htm Rhodes Scholarship constituencies] ] The numbers in the table are, at the moment, "highly unreliable.]Background
Rhodes died in 1902, and as specified in his will, the Rhodes Trust was set up soon after. Scholarships were to be awarded to citizens and/or residents of specified "Geographic Constituencies".
Allocations specified in the Will
There were initially 52 scholarships "alloted" to 9 geographic constituencies: Australia; Bermuda; Canada; Jamaica; Rhodesia; Newfoundland; New Zealand; Southern Africa and USA. In 1903, a further 5 scholarships were alloted to Germany.
However, the first scholarships were not actually "awarded" until 1904.
Allocations specified by the Trustees
During the ensuing 100 years, the Trustees have added, at one time or another, approximately another 40 scholarships, though not all have continued. Some of these extended the scheme to Commonwealth countries not mentioned in the Will.[ [http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/history.htm History of the Rhodes Trust and Rhodes Scholarship] ] ]Currently, scholars are selected from 14 specified geographic constituencies,[ namely: Australia; Bermuda; Canada; Germany; Hong Kong; India; Jamaica & Commonwealth Caribbean; Kenya; New Zealand; Pakistan; Southern Africa; USA; Zambia and Zimbabwe.]Other countries which have, at one time or another, nominated candidates include:
*Hong Kong (special case - Rhodes Scholarship#Allocations contains the paragraph:::"The scholarships for Hong Kong were abolished in July 1997 following its withdrawal from the Commonwealth (due to the transfer of sovereignty from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China). However, with the benefaction from the Lee Hysan Foundation (described by the Rhodes Trust as "substantial and generous"), the Rhodes Scholarships for Hong Kong are to be reintroduced." [ [http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/documents/HongKongMemorandumfor2007_000.pdf The Rhodes Scholarship for Hong Kong - Memorandum for 2007] ] )
*Malta (until independence, 1964, or designation as a republic, 1974) - TBD
*Other "Commomwealth" countries (until they declared their independence) - TBD
*Briefly, at various times, various European countries (add reference to relevant page on Rhodes Trust site)
*Others?
Unverified allocations
The "Brochure" on the USA Rhodes Trust site [ [http://www.rhodesscholar.org/PDF/archive/brochure12.pdf USA Rhodes Trust "Brochure"] ] contains the sentence::"Americans are joined in Oxford by Rhodes Scholars elected from Australia, Bangladesh, Bermuda, Canada, Commonwealth Caribbean, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe."However, other evidence that scholars are elected from Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore or Uganda has not (as yet) been located.
