The Rift Valley Institute is an independent research and educational association, based in
Kenya and theUnited Kingdom . It has been working in Eastern Africa, includingSudan and the Horn, since 2001.Local knowledge, global information
The aim of the Institute is to connect local knowledge with global information networks, in the spirit of the [http://www.un.org/documents/ga/res/47/a47r135.htm United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Minorities] and [http://www.unhchr.ch/udhr/lang/eng.htm Article 19] of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Action-oriented social research
Action-oriented research and the dissemination of information about Eastern Africa — within the region and beyond — are the Institute’s core activities, focussing on human rights, political economy, history and environmental conservation.
Training and support for education
The Institute works with educational institutions in Sudan and Kenya, supporting schools and running in-country training courses on Sudan for local and expatriate aid workers, diplomats, peace-keepers and researchers.

The Institute maintains an expanding open-access digital library, [http://www.sudanarchive.net The Sudan Open Archive] , available online and on disk.
