- Pope's Hill
Pope's Hill is a small settlement on a hill of the same name situated in the
Forest of Dean ,Gloucestershire within the parish ofLittledean . The hill is 12 miles south west ofGloucester and 3 miles east ofCinderford . The small village ofFlaxley lies in the valley to the immediate north. Pope's Hill got its name from Mary Pope who used to reside in Flaxley Abbey and walked over the hill as a young girl. There is a small principal road which runs over the hill starting from the A4151 just east of
Littledean and rejoins the A4151 further east at the Greyhound Inn. There are numerous other small roads linking the houses and smallholdings which are scattered sparsely across the hill. Rising to the west is Chestnuts Enclosure, an area ofForestry Commission woodland, and to the north, Welshbury Hill which hasIron Age workings. As well as the Greyhound which is a popular pub beside the busy main road with its trademark dinosaur "Horace" in the beer garden, there is also White House World, a hotel which sits on top of the hill commanding extensive views encompassing the
Severn Vale including north toBredon Hill and south towards Bath.May Hill dominates the view to the north. There used to be small chapel close to the Greyhound Inn but this is now a private house, although there is a church in Flaxley.
