Breage

Breage

Breage (also known as Breaca or Bray) was a late 5th century holy woman, revered as a saint in the Helston region of Cornwall, United Kingdom. The village and civil parish of Breage in Cornwall are named after her.

Breage is variously said to have been the daughter of King Geraint of Dumnonia or of Irish origin. John Leland recorded a few details of her life from a manuscript once kept at the church in Breage in Cornwall which she had founded. She was apparently born in "Lagonia" (perhaps Laois) and became a nun at Saint Brigid's foundation at 'Campus Breacae' in Ireland. She later travelled to Cornwall with a large company of Irish saints, among them Sinwin, Germoe, Elwen, Crowan, and Helan. She lived first in Pencair, then Trenwith and Talmeneth, where she built churches, before finally settling at Breage. Her feast day is 19 June (formerly 4 June) but Breage Fair is always the third Monday in June.
