St. William Grant

St. William Grant

St. William Grant was the person who started the struggle of the working class in Jamaica. He was uneducated and black and thus was not respected by the Colonial Government of his day. However, he was smart; understanding that as a black man he would never win the respect of the Colonials, he met Sir Alexander Bustamante and entrusted to him the responsibility of taking the struggles of the working class to the next level.

I find it virtually impossible to speak about the public of life of Sir Alexander Bustamante without making mention of St. William Grant. According to Dr. Orville Taylor, Senior Lecture in the Department of Sociology, Psychology & Social Work at the University of the West Indies "had it not been for St. William Grant, history might not have known Bustamante".

The St. William Grant Park in Kingston, Jamaica is named in honour of William Grant. [ [http://www.jnht.com/heritage_site.php?id=168 Jamaica National Heritage Trust] ]
