Intelligent Register System
IRS Introduction
With current quality demands on the market it is of vital importance to achieve optimum print quality. The Intelligent Register System is unique in more ways than one. The technology applied by Q.I. Press Controls to improve register quality has resulted in a unique system that fully automatically regulates the colour register, lays the web out accurately and ensures a perfect cut-off register. Purchase of the IRS will moreover result in considerable savings in raw materials for the professional printing company. The Intelligent Register System is suitable for:• Full-colour coldset rotary presses• Full-colour productions on heatset rotary presses• Full-colour on narrow web presses
The IRS camera with CCD technology views the printed side of the web and, as the press starts up, searches for register marks representing all print colours as well as a possible 2 PMS colours.
The printed register marks are almost invisible to the naked eye; each point measures 0.2 x 0.2 mm and can be positioned within a free space of 5x5 mm. Because these register marks are almost invisible, they can be placed on the editorial pages, avoiding paper loss through extra margins.
After starting up the press, the CCD
camera immediately measures any discrepancies between actual and target positions of the register marks. These measurements are converted into controls to correct the differences between the register marks in lateral and circumferential directions. Within seconds, this results in auto-make-ready. According to feedback from our clients on the performance of the IRS, this is faster than any other system on the market.During, production the IRS continuously monitors and adjusts the target positions of the register marks. The IRS cameras are fitted with a telecentric lens that does not require a fixed focus distance. That is why the IRS cameras are not affected by an undulating web, which means that they can be installed immediately after the last printing tower.Alternative systems are usually positioned after the chilling rollers on rotary presses, which is why these always react later than the IRS.
