Allen was signed by the Indians as an amateur free agent in by|1956. He made his major league debut on
April 14 , by|1961 with the Cleveland Indians at age 23. On that day, Allen pitched to three hitters, all of which Allen retired. Despite having a breakout season in 1961 with a 3.75 earned run average with over eight one innings pitched, Allen had an earned run average of 5.87 in by|1962 in just over thirty innings pitched.Allen had an ERA of 4.66 in by|1963 while pitching fifty six innings. After the season, the Indians traded Allen to the
Pittsburgh Pirates on December 14 for players to be named. The Pirates later sent Allen back to Cleveland in April by|1964.
