Robert Gray Allen (born October 23, 1937) is a former Major League Baseball starting pitcher, born in Tatum, Texas. He batted and threw left-handed during his baseball career, which saw him pitch part or all of five seasons in Major League Baseball, all with the Cleveland Indians.

Major League Baseball career

Allen was signed by the Indians as an amateur free agent in by|1956. He made his major league debut on April 14, by|1961 with the Cleveland Indians at age 23. On that day, Allen pitched to three hitters, all of which Allen retired. Despite having a breakout season in 1961 with a 3.75 earned run average with over eight one innings pitched, Allen had an earned run average of 5.87 in by|1962 in just over thirty innings pitched.

Allen had an ERA of 4.66 in by|1963 while pitching fifty six innings. After the season, the Indians traded Allen to the Pittsburgh Pirates on December 14 for players to be named. The Pirates later sent Allen back to Cleveland in April by|1964. After years of working back to the Major Leagues, Allen recorded a 4.21 ERA in by|1966 while pitching over fifty one innings. In by|1967, Allen had a 2.98 ERA while pitching over fifty four innings. However, Allen never pitched in the majors again. At the time of his retirement Allen had a lifetime 7-12 record, a 4.11 ERA, 132 walks, and 199 strikeouts. Allen was 4 for 31 hitting, with a lifetime batting average of .129. His lifetime fielding percentage was .944.

Age

It is notable that Bob Allen was one of many young pitchers on the Indians team. For instance, in his rookie year, Allen was one of fourteen pitchers under the age of thirty, with Johnny Antonelli as the only pitcher over the age of thirty.
