Ainsworth is a city in Washington County, Iowa, United States. It part of the Iowa City, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 524 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Ainsworth is located at coor dms|41|17|25|N|91|33|15|W|city (41.290175, -91.554283)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 524 people, 199 households, and 137 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,381.0 people per square mile (532.4/km²). There were 208 housing units at an average density of 548.2/sq mi (211.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.41% White, 0.38% Native American, 8.02% from other races, and 0.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.65% of the population.

There were 199 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.26.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 107.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $41,071, and the median income for a family was $50,208. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $19,583 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,627. About 7.2% of families and 10.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.3% of those under age 18 and 10.0% of those age 65 or over.
