census GR|2 of 2000, there were 649 people, 248 households, and 171 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 844.6 people per square mile (325.4/km²). There were 261 housing units at an average density of 339.7/sq mi (130.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.08% White, 0.15% Native American, 0.62% Asian, and 0.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.31% of the population.There were 248 households out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.73.
In the city the population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 2.6% from 18 to 24, 17.3% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 42.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 56 years. For every 100 females there were 79.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.4 males.

Students from the area attend Elk Horn-Kimballton Community School, which is located in Elk Horn. The school mascots are the "Danes" and "Lady Danes," which represents Elk Horn's Danish ancestry and tradition. Along with the nearby village of
