Princeton is a city in Scott County, Iowa, United States. The population was 946 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Princeton is located at coor dms|41|40|24|N|90|20|35|W|city (41.673282, -90.342953)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.6 km²), all of it land.

Education

Princeton is part of the North Scott School District, which spans 220 square miles in northern Scott County. The district is served by a seven-member board of education, which meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at the district's Administration Center in Eldridge.

Elementary-aged students from Princeton, as well as McCausland and adjacent rural areas, attend school at Virgil Grissom Elementary, located on the city's west edge. Older students attend either North Scott Junior High or North Scott High School, both located in Eldridge.

Churches

Princeton residents are served by two churches:

Zion Lutheran Church, part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The church's history dates to 1852, when the now-defunct Salem Lutheran Church was founded. The Salem church building, located four miles west of Princeton, was abandoned after merging with Zion Lutheran, which was formed in the 1890s. The building was later torn down, while a co-located cemetery remains in use. The Zion building, at 204 Highway 67, was built in 1898 and extensively remodeled in 1971. Organizations include the church choir, a Youth Group, Men's Group and Women of Joy. A nine-member church council represents the church's interests.

Princeton Presbyterian Church, part of Presbyterian Church USA's Presbytery of East Iowa. The church was founded in 1854, and a building ereced on Third Street in 1856 for $800. The 1856 building burned in 1888, and a new structure was built that year. Several additions and remodelings have taken place since then. The church had a short-lived stint with a more fundamentalist branch of the Presbyterian Church in the mid-1930s; membership waned for several years due to resulting fallout, but new leadership helped revitalize the church. Organizations include a choir, a bell choir, a Good News Club and a youth group.

Both churches are members of the Princeton, Pleasant Valley, Argo and LeClaire Pastors' Group, a coalition of clergy from churches serving those communities.
