East Jutland metropolitan area (Byregion Østjylland) can rightly be described as a functional coherent urban area linked by both the infrastructure and labour across municipal boundaries, with more than 1.2 million people living in the region it represents approximately 23% of Denmark's population and is the second largest coherent urban area after the
Copenhagen metropolitan area [ [http://www2.blst.dk/udgiv/Publikationer/2008/978-87-92256-58-4/html/kap05.htm#5.1 "Danish Befolkningsforhold i Østjylland] , Miljøministeriet, august 2008] .. It is estimated that the area are sufficiently small to be flexible but at the same time has the critical mass to get international visibility inAarhus as the driving force described as a city with weak signs of status as a World city [http://www.blst.dk/NR/rdonlyres/D57AF934-C471-41E6-A8B0-389AF80A94A6/0/Visionsoplaeg20082008.pdf "Danish Vision Østjylland"] , Miljøministeriet, 20. august 2008] , in line with cities likeAntwerp ,Dresden ,Glasgow ,Marseille ,Saint Petersburg andTurin .The area consists of 17 municipalities (see below) which have been invited by the national government to find common ground for cooperation.
East Jutland is by far the area in Denmark with the fastest growing population, about 10,000 per year. From
1 January 2007 to 1 January2008 the population increased by 10,400.The East Jutland metropolitan covers a comparatively large area of 9,997 km², slightly larger than the
Greater Oslo Region (8.900 km²), but small compared to some other metropolitan areas such as theHamburg Metropolitan Region (19,000 km²), theGreater Los Angeles Area (87,940 km²) and thePhoenix metropolitan area (37,744 km²).Transport

There are two primary commercial airports serving the area:

The area has several
motorway s but theEuropean route E45 is the motorway that goes from the south to the north and is more or less responsible for the growth in the area; it is along this motorway that the East Jutland metropolitan area is growing.ports
