I did tell them that I had a cousin that died [of AIDS] .... To assert that I said they get what they deserve is just beyond comprehension," he said from Tallahassee. Hays said he has treated AIDS patients as a medical professional. He also said he was "very empathetic" with the group's "one-on-one" disease-management care. I have spent a lifetime as a health-care professional and have compassionately cared for several patients afflicted with AIDS. My own cousin died of this disease, and it was a tragedy for him to die so young. To say that I said otherwise is absolutely not true." According to Smith of Equality Florida, earlier in March Hays allegedly made an anti-gay remark while meeting with a group of students who were lobbying for a safe schools bill. One of the students present in that meeting with Hays, Jessica Osborn, described the remark as follows: "After telling [Hays] my story, he proceeded to say he was repulsed by homosexuals, and we needed extensive psychological treatment," Osborn said. Hays did not deny telling the students that they needed
conversion therapy .
