Aguinaldo

Aguinaldo is a folk genre of Christmas music, which originates from Puerto Rico and is based on an archaic form of Spanish christmas carol. Aguinaldo music is often performed by what is called "parrandas"—a casual group of people, often family or friends, who go from house to house.

Venezuelan aguinaldo

In Venezuela the word "aguinaldo" is associated with a gift and also with an own musical sort of Christmas. Of ample dispersion in the country, the "aguinaldo" song is interpreted not only to religious motives, that is to say, to Jesus but also to the human (The Christmas joy), and according to the region it is sung with the support of diverse musical instruments.

The "aguinaldo" is the Christmas musical sort of greater national dispersion. In many communities of Venezuela it is customary for the musicians sing in front of the cross and the "pesebres". In the celebration of the "Pastores de San Joaquín", the "aguinaldos" are intoned. The "aguinaldo" execution of religious type is common in the "Paradura del niño" celebrated in the states Táchira and Trujillo.

The "aguinaldos", in many cases, maintain melodies in which the old carols are recognized, but the rhythmical factor and the use of numerous instruments create differences from them. It is for that reason that can be spoken of an evolutionary process in the "aguinaldo" that includes the presence of "síncopas", (great metrical freedom). They can comprise the instrumental set of "parranda navideña": the violin, clarinet, "bandolín", and until the accordion like instruments, that are in charge of the prelude and interlude and to duplicate the melody of the song if they wish. Nevertheless, the richest aspect conforms the support that can include "charrasca, chineco, the triangle, drums" of one and two patches, "panderos, furruco, the cuatro, the cinco", sometimes the "guitar" and "tiple". The aguinaldos are conformed generally by six verses. Verses that can be specially composed, or improvised in agreement with the circumstances.

Trinidadian aguinaldo

Aguinaldo or Serenal is a music genre used in Parang (Parranda) a type of Christmas music that come to Trinidad and Tobago from Venezuela. Parranderos announce their arrival in song and seek to gain entry to the homes of family and friends to relate the story of the birth of Christ, and to share in the joy of the message of Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all men.
