Naaman Fletcher

Naaman Fletcher (February 27, 1824 – December 20, 1864) was one of founders (known as the 'Immortal Six') of the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. He was adopted by a distant relative and was admitted to the bar before being enrolled in the sophomore class at Jefferson College in 1847. A congenial student, Naaman was very social. The first secretary of Phi Gamma Delta, he did not graduate with the rest of the founders in 1848. He stayed for his senior year and became the second president of Phi Gamma Delta, thereby ensuring continuation of the fraternity. After graduation, he practiced law for about two years before becoming the editor of the 'Massillon News'. He later became publisher of this newspaper with fellow Phi Gam James W.Logan (Jefferson 1849). He married Elizabeth Crosby, the daughter of a prominent physician, and moved with her to Wabash, Indiana in 1853. There he bought 'The Gazette' and 'The Intelligencer', combining them into a pro-Union publication. ["The Phi Gamma Delta Story: The 'Immortal Six'", pages 91-92.
