Spartak Moscow successfully defended the championship, winning their fifth Russian title.1KAMAZ-Chally were deducted 6 points for failing to pay a transfer fee

Spartak qualified for the UEFA Champions League 1998-99. Rotor and Dynamo qualified for the UEFA Cup 1998-99.
