1997 in Russian football

1997 in Russian football brought the fifth national title to Spartak Moscow, and the second Russian Cup victory to Lokomotiv Moscow.

National team

Russia national football team failed to qualify for the 1998 FIFA World Cup final tournament, losing on aggregate to Italy in the play-offs.

Top League

First League

Due to reduction of the Top League to 16 clubs, only the was only one promotion place in the First League, which was taken by Uralan.

Aleksey Chernov of Lada-Grad became the top goalscorer with 29 goals.

econd League

The following clubs have earned promotion by winning tournaments in their respective Second League zones:

*FC Rubin Kazan ("Centre")
*FC Tom Tomsk ("East")

Cup

The Russian Cup was won by Lokomotiv Moscow, who beat Dynamo Moscow 2–0 in the final.

UEFA club competitions

UEFA Intertoto Cup 1997

Dynamo Moscow, Lokomotiv Nizhny Novgorod, and Torpedo Moscow, the Russian clubs in the UEFA Intertoto Cup 1998, started the campaign well, winning their respective groups. However, all three clubs were knocked out in the semifinals by MSV Duisburg, Halmstads BK, and AJ Auxerre, respectively.

UEFA Champions League 1997-98

Spartak Moscow failed to qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League 1997-98, losing to FC Košice 1–2 on aggregate.

UEFA Cup Winners' Cup 1997-98

Lokomotiv Moscow overcame FC Belshina Bobruisk and Kocaelispor, reaching the spring stage of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup 1997-98.

UEFA Cup 1997-98

Rotor Volgograd eliminated Odra Wodzisław in the second qualifying round of UEFA Cup 1998-99. In the first round they knocked out Örebro SK, but in the second round they lost to S.S. Lazio.

Alania Vladikavkaz reached the first round by defeating FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and lost there to MTK Hungária FC.

Spartak Moscow reached the spring stage of the cup, eliminating FC Sion, Real Valladolid, and Karlsruher SC in the first three rounds.
