John the Chanter was a medieval Bishop of Exeter.

Life

His exact background is unclear. He may be the same person as the John Planeta who was a clerk of Thomas Becket's during Becket's exile, but the connection is not proven. All that is known is that he was elderly when he was consecrated.Barlow "John the Chanter (d. 1191)" "Oxford Dictionary of National Biography"]

He was consecrated on October 5 1186. He was present at King Richard I's coronation.

He died on June 1 1191.Fryde "Handbook of British Chronology" p. 246] He is buried in Exeter Cathedral, where his tomb survives. [http://www.exeter-cathedral.org.uk/Gallery/Bishops/B02.html John the Chanter's tomb in Exeter Cathedral] accessed on October 26, 2007]
