Mountainside Middle School is a public middle school located in Colbert, Washington. It serves 7th and 8th graders living in the eastern feeder area of the Mead School District. The school opened its doors on August 18th 2008 and welcomed its first students on September 2nd. It is one of two middle schools in the Mead School District, the other being Northwood Middle School.

The school was constructed as a replacement for Mead Middle School, which is currently the oldest building in the Mead School District. The current building that houses Mead Middle School was built in 1927.

The building of Mead Middle School, the old school, is not used anymore, because it is 97 years old and its establishment date was in 1911. It was the oldest building in the Mead School District. The mascot of Mountainside Middle School is the mountain lions. The current principal of Mountainside Middle School is Craig Busch.

History

Mead Middle School's history dates back to the early 1900s. In 1911, the school was originally founded as Union High School.

Built with bricks fired locally in Mead, the construction of still-standing Mead Union High School building started in 1926 after voters living in the Mead School District approved the $35,000 construction project. The school was designed by George M. Rasque, who was known for designing other local school buildings in the period.^[1] The Union High School building still stands today and serves as one of the components of the Mead Middle School complex. Mead Union High became Mead High in 1933, and the building was a high school until 1972 when a new Mead High School opened. After the new high school opened, the building was renamed Mead Junior High School and housed 8-9 graders from 1972 until 1997, when Mt. Spokane, the district's second high school opened. Since then, the school has been called Mead Middle School and served 7th and 8th graders.

Mountainside Middle School

Mountainside Middle school is in its first year of use. It is the new Mead Middle School, called Mountainside Middle School, for the old building was 97 years old and was established in 1911.

The new and much larger middle school was budgeted at $33 million.

Washington Drug Free Youth (WDFY)

Often pronounced as wide-fie by the students, WDFY offers fun activities for the drug free youth. Some activities include, pizza parties, donkey basketball, and trips to various Spokane locations such as the mall. WDFY is there to provide support, alternate activities and drug free friends for the youth that are proud to be free of drugs.

Year Book Club

Members get to take pictures on occasions such as dances, holiday celebrations, and sporting events. They also help to put these pictures on the pages of their year books.

Six Pillars of Character

The six pillars of character are Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. At the old Mead Middle School, they are painted on six pillars in the main commons area as well as on posters located in every classroom around the school.
