- USS D-3 (SS-19)
USS "D-3" (SS-19) was a "D"-class submarine of the
United States Navy . Her keel was laid down byFore River Shipbuilding Company inQuincy, Massachusetts , under a subcontract fromElectric Boat Company ofGroton, Connecticut , as "Salmon", making her the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for thesalmon . "Salmon" was launched on12 March 1910 sponsored by Miss R. Fitzgerald, and commissioned on8 September 1910 with Lieutenant D. G. Weaver in command. She was renamed "D-3" on17 November 1911 .The new submarine joined the Atlantic Torpedo Fleet at
Newport, Rhode Island . The torpedo fleet was active along the East Coast and made a cruise to theCaribbean Sea between17 October 1912 and20 January 1913 after which "D-3" remained to serve with the forces operating in Mexican waters following the occupation of Veracruz. She rejoined the flotilla atNorfolk, Virginia , on16 June 1914 and with them visitedWashington, DC , from17 July to22 July , before returning to their homeport24 July . From21 September 1917 , "D-3" served as flagship of Submarine Division 2. She trained aspiring submariners at Newport andNew London, Connecticut , until placed in commission, in reserve,5 September 1919 . She was placed in ordinary15 July 1921 . Towed intoPhiladelphia Navy Yard on20 March 1922 , "D-3" was decommissioned the same day and sold31 July 1922 .See USS "Salmon" for other ships of the same name.
