Romare Bearden ,Robert Colescott ,Jacob Lawrence , Norman Lewis,Chris Ofili ,Betye Saar ,Lorna Simpson ,Kara Walker ,William T. Williams , andHale Woodruff . The museum is custodian of an extensive archive of the work ofJames VanDerZee , photographer of the Harlem community from 1906 to 1983.In 2005, it was among 406 New York City arts and
social service institutions to receive part of a $20 million grant from theCarnegie Corporation , which was made possible through a donation by New York City mayorMichael Bloomberg .
