USS Cymophane (PYc-26) was an "Cymophane"-class
patrol yacht acquired by theU.S. Navy early duringWorld War II . She was used for patrol, escort,antisubmarine , and rescue operations along coastal waters."Cymophane" was built in 1926 as "Sea Forth" by
Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.,Newport News, Virginia ; acquired by the Navy2 March 1942 ; and commissioned6 August 1942 , Lieutenant R. M. Hull,USNR , in command.World War II service
Departing
Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin ,9 August 1942 after the completion of her conversion, "Cymophane" in company with twomotor minesweepers sailed by way ofCleveland, Ohio , and theSt. Lawrence River toNova Scotia where she joined aconvoy and sailed26 August forNew York , arriving2 September . She served at New York under the3d Naval District .Reassigned to the 5th Naval District
Reassigned to the
5th Naval District , "Cymophane" arrived atNorfolk, Virginia ,21 November 1942 . She served inantisubmarine patrol, convoy escort duty along theU.S. East Coast , and rescue operations until6 August 1944 when she proceeded toPhiladelphia Navy Yard , where she was decommissioned25 August 1944 .In-service operations
After overhaul, she was placed in service
21 September 1944 , and on2 October departed forNew London, Connecticut , arriving on the 4th. Attached to the Underwater Sound Laboratory she alternated experimental work withsubmarine training until30 April 1946 .Post-war decommissioning
She arrived at
Brooklyn Navy Yard 10 May , and was placed out of service23 May 1946 . She was transferred to theMaritime Commission 10 June 1948 . Sold in1952 to Visitor, Inc. ofNew York, New York , and renamed "Seaforth"; Fate: she was dismantled in1956 .References
