Credit Union Central of Canada is the national cooperative federation for credit unions in Canada, outside Quebec. The Toronto-based organization provides federal government relations, media relations, represents the industry in many associations and organizes several conferences each year.

As of December 31, 2010, there were 386 credit unions affiliated with Credit Union Central of Canada. They had more than five million members and assets of $127.4 billion.[1] Canadian Central is owned by nine provincial centrals. Those centrals are owned by the individual credit unions, which are owned by their member/customers.
The largest credit unions in Canada (excluding Quebec) are: Vancity, Servus Credit Union, Coast Capital Savings, Meridian Credit Union and First West Credit Union.

History

Central of Canada (originally called the Canadian Co-operative Credit Society) was incorporated by a special act of Parliament in 1953, after years of preparatory work by the provincial centrals and the Co-operative Union of Canada.[2]

Canadian Central is a member of Interac, the World Council of Credit Unions and the Canadian Co-operative Association.
