Plot

Based on a true story, the movie involves a lesbian couple yearning for a family of their own. Janine Nielsen (Brooke Shields) and her partner, Sandy Cataldi (Cherry Jones), elect to have a baby via artificial insemination with Sandy as the biological mother. Sandy discovers she has lupus when she almost collapses at their daughter Heather's christening. They handle the disease as a family for several years until Sandy dies. Sandy's parents (Anne Meara and Al Waxman) sue to gain custody of the child. Addressing moral, legal and ethical issues, Janine wins the custody battle after a video tape surfaces in which Sandy expressed her love for both Janine and Heather and her wish for them to stay together. Janine lets the Cataldis know that they are welcome and that she wants them to be a part of Heather's life.
