Tombstone promotion

Tombstone promotion

A Tombstone Promotion was a means of promoting combat-decorated officers of the United States Navy to the next highest rank held at the time of retirement. For instance, a retiring captain (O-6) who had been awarded the Navy Cross received the honorific of rear admiral (O-7) and carried that title literally to the grave, hence the name.

Aside from prestige, "tombstone promotions" also enabled the officer to receive slightly higher retirement pay.

The process ended in 1959.
