Lenox is a city in Adams and Taylor counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 1,401 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Lenox is located at coor dms|40|52|60|N|94|33|41|W|city (40.883195, -94.561293)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²).2.0 square miles (5.1 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (3.41%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,402 people, 559 households, and 335 families residing in the city. The population density was 709.0 people per square mile (273.2/km²). There were 623 housing units at an average density of 315.3/sq mi (121.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.79% White, 0.71% Asian, 3.28% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.28% of the population.

There were 559 households out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% were married couples living together, 4.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.9% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 24.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,958, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $26,938 versus $18,125 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,299. About 5.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.4% of those under age 18 and 22.8% of those age 65 or over.
