George Hamilton (musician)

George "Spike" Hamilton (1901-1957) was a popular bandleader [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=9C01E3DA1E3EF930A15751C1A9679C8B63] that led a band based at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. [http://www.nfo.net/usa/h1.html#Hamilton] Among the musicians in the band included Ray Robbins, Spike Jones and Leighton Noble. In the 1930s, he appeared in a movie called "Gift Of Gab (film)". He also appeared in a 1937 short film entitled Sunday Night at the Trocadero [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0177265/] .

Hamilton is the father of the movie and television star George Hamilton (they are not Sr. & Jr.).

Hamilton also developed a perfume called "White Shoulders". He was married to the often-married Anne Stevens Potter Hamilton Hunt Spalding, with whom he fathered the actor George Hamilton. [http://www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/CA_Profiles/People_Profile/0,2540,61,00.html]

Name Confusion

George "Spike" Hamilton is not a "Sr.", as his son's (the actor) middle name is "Stevens", which is the maiden name of the actor's mother, which was Spike's wife, Anne Stevens. Therefore, Spike couldn't possibly be a "Sr." unless his birth middle name just happened to the same as his future wife's maiden name.

Furthermore, his son George Hamilton (the actor) and George Hamilton IV (the 1960's country singer) are sometimes confused with each other due not only to their names but also their being almost the same age, so much so that Wikipedia (and subsequently various other sources) listed his birth name as "George Stevens Hamilton IV", which is not accurate as he's not the fourth (IV) George Stevens Hamilton (he's the 1st in his family) and obviously an error due to confusion with the singer George Hamilton IV. The two are not related. [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=9C01E3DA1E3EF930A15751C1A9679C8B63]
