Kinetic Playground

Kinetic Playground

The Kinetic Playground was a nightclub located in Chicago, Illinois. It was opened on April 5, 1968 by Aaron Russo.

Russo originally called the venue the Electric Theater, but he was sued by the owners of the Electric Circus in New York, and in an out of court settlement he changed the club's name a few months after its opening.

The club became a driving force in the music business, hosting famous rock bands and musicians such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Iron Butterfly, Rotary Connection and Jefferson Airplane. The interior of the venue was featured the film "Medium Cool" (1969). The movie was filmed on location during the 1968 Democratic Convention and many members of the Playground crew were hired as extras.

The venue was closed after being badly damaged by a fire. It is not related to the Kinetic Playground venue currently (2008) operating in Chicago.
