History

Archaeological field work has on the campground has revealed that the first habitation of Serpent Mounds occurred about 2000 years during the prehistoric Middle Woodland Period. The first peoples occupy the site are a prehistoric archaeological complex referred to by archaeologists as the Point Peninsula Complex, which existed in central and southeastern Ontario, southwestern Quebec, and northern parts New York state between 300 BC and 700 AD.
