The mall opened in 1972 with
the Bay andSimpson's as its department store anchors. It was the fourth fully-enclosed and the first multi-level mall inMetropolitan Toronto . TheHudson's Bay Company ,parent company of the Bay, purchased Simpson's in 1978. In 1991, it sold the Simpson's store in Fairview (along with five others that were co-located with the Bay) toSears Canada .Redevelopment
Fairview Mall is currently completing an $84 million, three-phase full renovation and redevelopment project, which began in July 2006 and is not finished yet. Phase 1 includes a newly expanded
Shoppers Drug Mart and a large formatLiquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) store. The food court, a key highlight of the renovation, will be moved to the lower level under a convert|60|ft|m|sing=on high skylight near The Bay. All entrances to the mall will incorporate hands-free technology and the common areas will be transformed with more open spaces and stylish wood finishes. Elevators serving the third floor offices for the first time will be added near the Moxie's entrance, and the front facade along Sheppard Avenue will receive a complete facelift. Phases 2 and 3 will include further enhancements.The Rainbow Cinema has closed down to make way for a brand new Cineplex SilverCity theatre, set to open in October 2008.cite web
